Weekly Plugin Roundup - June 15, 2026

This week delivered some genuinely innovative approaches to familiar problems. From AI that actually understands your plugin folder to a bass synthesizer that splits frequency ranges into separate synthesis engines, these releases push beyond incremental updates.

Safari Audio Meaw:Chain - AI Chain Builder

Safari Audio launched Meaw:Chain, an AI-powered plugin that builds custom processing chains using the plugins you already own. Instead of recommending generic processing approaches, Meaw:Chain scans your plugin folder and designs chains from your actual AU, VST3, and AAX collection.

The workflow is straightforward: describe what you want ("warmer vocal," "vintage guitar tone," "tighter drum bus") or record audio directly into the plugin. Meaw:Chain analyzes both your request and your available plugins, then constructs a complete chain using your tools.

What makes this interesting is the specificity. Rather than generic "use an EQ and compressor" advice, Meaw:Chain might chain your FabFilter Pro-Q 3 with specific frequency cuts into your 1176 emulation with particular attack/release settings, finishing with your tape saturation plugin.

The AI understands plugin categories and sonic characteristics, so it won't suggest your vintage tube compressor for surgical EQ work or your transparent linear-phase EQ for musical tone shaping.

Platform: VST3, AU, AAX (Windows, macOS)

UVI Rumble - Multiband Bass Synthesizer

UVI released Rumble, a bass synthesizer built around a three-engine architecture that separates sound generation into dedicated frequency bands. Instead of applying global processing to a full-spectrum sound, Rumble splits synthesis into Body, Character, and Air sections, each operating as complete synthesis engines.

Body handles the fundamental low-frequency content, Character shapes the harmonic mid-range, and Air controls the high-frequency detail. Each section has its own oscillators, waveshapers, and effects, allowing independent development of different frequency ranges.

This approach solves a common bass synthesis problem: processing that improves the low end often muddies the harmonics, while high-frequency enhancement can thin out the fundamental. Rumble's multiband architecture lets you design each frequency range independently, then blend them cohesively.

The sonic range covers everything from sub-heavy electronic bass to aggressive distorted leads. The frequency separation makes it particularly effective for bass sounds that need to cut through dense mixes while maintaining low-end weight.

Platform: VST3, AU, AAX (64-bit standalone available)

Price: $99 intro until June 28 (regular $199)

Release: June 11, 2026

Sound Magic Crystal Grand - MIDI 2.0 Piano

Sound Magic released Crystal Grand, a hybrid-modeled piano collection featuring two grand pianos with full MIDI 2.0 support. The collection includes Mega CFX (127 true velocity layers) and Modern 275, both built using Sound Magic's hybrid sampling plus modeling approach.

Crystal Grand's MIDI 2.0 implementation supports high-resolution velocity, polyphonic aftertouch, and enhanced pedal response. For users with MIDI 2.0 controllers, this provides significantly more expressive control than standard MIDI 1.0's 7-bit resolution.

The hybrid modeling combines multi-sampled source material with real-time physical modeling calculations. Sound Magic claims this approach delivers the realism of large sample libraries (they mention 411GB source material) while maintaining a compact 1GB installation footprint.

The AI-powered Freeform Layer V2 system adapts the piano's response to playing style and velocity patterns in real-time, adjusting resonance, decay, and harmonic content based on performance context.

Platform: VST3, AU (Windows, macOS)

Price: $169 intro until September 11 (regular $299)

Release: June 12, 2026

Softube Updates - Seven New Plugins

Softube pushed its biggest plugin update of 2026 with version 2.6.38, adding seven new plugins to their collection: American Mainstayer 100W, Bass Standard Line V8, Lion Head Vibrato, Pacific Dual Tremolo 100W Silver, Tinnerö Tremolo, and Tube Distortion.

The release focuses on modulation and distortion effects, expanding Softube's amplifier and stompbox modeling beyond their established guitar amp emulations. The American Mainstayer 100W appears to be a clean amplifier platform, while the Bass Standard Line V8 targets bass guitar processing.

The tremolo plugins (Pacific Dual Tremolo, Tinnerö Tremolo, Lion Head Vibrato) suggest different approaches to amplitude and pitch modulation, likely modeled from specific hardware units. Tube Distortion rounds out the collection with what appears to be a dedicated overdrive/distortion processor.

The update also adds Direct DAW Control support for Ableton Live, improving integration between Softube's plugin interface and Live's automation system.

Platform: VST3, AU, AAX

Price: Part of existing Softube subscriptions/bundles

Release: June 10, 2026

Phase Fiasco Annulus - Free Resonator

Phase Fiasco released Annulus, a free polyphonic resonator synthesizer based on Mutable Instruments' Rings physical modeling engine. Following their well-received Tape Fiasco plugin, developer Jonas Eriksson continues exploring Emilie Gillet's open-source code.

Annulus combines four linked processors: Rings (resonator), Spiral (effects), Velvet (texture), and Distortion. The interface responds dynamically to incoming audio with real-time visual feedback showing resonance behavior.

The Rings implementation covers the full range of Mutable Instruments' original hardware: struck strings, plucked strings, bowed strings, and blown pipes. The additional processing stages expand the sonic possibilities beyond pure resonator territory into more abstract soundscaping.

Like the original Rings hardware, Annulus excels at transforming simple input signals into complex, evolving textures. Feed it basic oscillator waves and get back rich, harmonically complex resonances that respond musically to pitch and amplitude changes.

Platform: VST3, AU (Windows, macOS)

Price: Free

Release: June 12, 2026

The Week's Innovation

This week's releases share a common thread: they solve specific workflow problems rather than adding generic features. Meaw:Chain addresses the "what plugins should I use" question by understanding your actual collection. Rumble tackles bass synthesis frequency conflicts through dedicated multiband engines. Softube expands their modeling focus beyond guitar amps.

Even the free release, Annulus, brings high-quality physical modeling to producers without requiring hardware investment or complex routing. These aren't incremental updates, they're tools designed around real production challenges.
